Why Automate?

Have you ever wondered what keeps services like Amazon, Google, Netflix and Zoom always on? Why do many enterprises struggle to achieve similar efficiencies? We listened to dozens of practitioners with varying backgrounds, ranging from on-call engineers, SREs, automation engineers, CIOs, VPs of IT - and heard the same pain points over and over again. It takes a village to maintain high availability (say 99.99%) and hundreds of late-night hours to fix problems in cloud infrastructure. Every enterprise wants to operate at the efficiency of web-scale services. Automation is key to operating any large-scale service in the cloud, but at what cost?

Our story

I first met my co-founder Xiaoyun Zhu, in the summer of 2006, when I was in my second year of PhD. She was a researcher at HP Labs and I joined her team as an intern. I spent my next two summers at HP Labs with Xiaoyun as my mentor and it changed the way I looked at systems. She has the uncanny ability to apply theory to practical systems, while making it easy for systems people like me to understand the theory. I eventually wrote my PhD thesis on AutoControl, building automation loops grounded in control theory, with Xiaoyun serving on my PhD committee.

Fast forward to early last year, I quit Cisco and we started exploring ideas around our vision of building an automated system to perform root-cause analysis and remediation. We later met our co-founder David in March, who had deep operational expertise in working on some of the largest systems in the world at Facebook, EchoSign and SnapFish. He’s self-taught and jokes “It doesn’t take a PhD to do this” (Xiaoyun and I both have PhDs 😊). He is a true builder with the ability to think strategically while hacking on systems, mentoring people and architecting elegant solutions to complex problems. I asked David to join us and we’re pleased to have him on board as our "Chief Problem Solver"!

We quickly realized, before we could build a self-healing system using ML/AI, we had to solve the problem of Ops toil.
